“It takes a village to raise a child”

Thanks to Marlene Wörner, SUR Costa del Sol, for sharing our story to our German friends and fans.

*****

“A Swedish couple brings an educational project in the desert to life.

A team cleaned one square kilometer around the Moroccan village Tagounite with the support of 155 kids.

For the last five years, the Swedish couple Victoria and Joakim Ahlen and their two children live in the countryside of Frigiliana, the homebase of their activities. In 2013, they focused the Vilostrada Foundation, a non-profit organisation, which, in cooperation with Association Atawassol, advocates herself for education of Nomad children, a green and clean Sahara, as well as an Amazigh life of the community in and around Moroccan Tagounite. “Every child have a right for an education“, declares Victoria Ahlen, who turns the collected money over on site personally to the partner organisation and the local community .

A special project was organised on October 23. Along with 155 kids, one square kilometer around the desert village Tagounite was cleaned off trash and refuse. Tagounite is the next to last village along the desert road. It resides between Zagora and M`Hamid. In the early morning, seven members of the Tanmirt Expedition team (Tanmirt means “Thank you“ in Amazigh/Berber language) came together at the education center, which is run by the Association Atawassol along with the support of the Vilostrada Foundation and local government. “Most people we told believed this endeavour to be an impossible task. Yet, we proved that we can do this all together, reports Victoria Ahlen, managing director of the Vilostrada Foundation. 12 year old Normad boy Mubarak (friend of the family) was the first one on site. Only 15 minutes later five more kids showed up, and by the minute more and more kids joined to clean up the trash and to help clear the area around the education center from plastic, glass and tins. Together, they filled 90 bags within an hour and a half. “This project is mainly a message to the kids, but should also be seen as a wake up call for the adults. Together we will make the sahara green and clean again“, says Brahim Elaabdouli, regional director of the Vilostrada Foundation on site. “October 23 also marks the beginning of the Tanmirt Junior Clubs (TJC), a place for kids by kids“, says Victoria Ahlen, and adds: “Children will learn in a garden, set up by us together, how they can make the Sahara green again. Everyone is welcome to join the Tanmirt Junior Club. It takes a village to raise a child“, declares Victoria Ahlen.

Good morning from Sahara. We shared a Swedish/Nomad breakfast with our friends. Scrambled eggs a winner but the belbula/oatmeal was not a favourite.

An invitation to visit Hassna turned out to be a big feast. The true Moroccan kindness of welcoming guest with big smiles, warm hearts and the cakes, did we mention cakes?
Susan, Philippa and I gave the chocolate cake 12 points 😉

How we wish she could open a tea and cake store in every town.
When you buy a Vilostrada craft you kickstart new enterprises and make the Sahara green with the Vilostrada Foundation.
